SARADA MAHADEVA IYER AYURVEDIC EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE TRUST

Dr. Y. Mahadeva Iyer, in memory of whom this trust is formed was born in the year 1902 and had his early education in the remote village by name Gnalam in the southern most part of India. He, along with the formal education learned the Vedas under his father, himself an erudite vedic scholar. After finishing his school education, though very brilliant academically family circumstances compelled him to look for some permanent job, preferably in the Government, because Government employment was easily secured in those days. After having his stint in such appointments, as his innate nature would have it and his independent temperament forced him to do something by himself.

That was the turning point and he went to Trivandrum, the then capital of the erstwhile Travancore royalty in persuit of his new avocation. Their he began to take lessons in Ayurveda sastra and training under his maternal uncle, who was the palace physician Mahadeva Iyer being himself versatile in the Sanskrit language it was not difficult for him to assimilate the tough subject as most of the Ayurvedic texts were in Sanskrit language.

After completing this he went to north Kerala to the Vaidyamadam an institution of acknowledged repute in the traditional practice of this system. for further internship training known as Gurukula pattern of undergoing any training in those days.

Then in the year 1920 he started his independent practice of the Ayurveda system of medicine in Derisanamcope village in the southern end of Tamilnadu, thus fulfilling his own aspiration. Since then there was no turning back and found his way through the corridors of the length and breath of the state.

In the process his success in the practice of the medicine was phenomenal. His relentless work bore fruits and his name is now synonymous with the village and the name is almost knocking the door of many a western country.

Mahadeva Iyer was by nature very compassionate and philanthropic and no one approaching him for help returned with empty hands. He extended his service to the needy especially the poor.

The Ayurvedic hospital founded by Late. Mahadeva Iyer is situated in a picturesque location and is catering to the needs of not only the local population but also of those coming from other states and abroad. Patients are taken care of with almost involvement and all basic comforts are provided to them.

Now Dr. L. Mahadevan, grandson of the Illustrious Mahadeva Iyer (who left this world in the year 1980) after completing his post graduation in Ayurveda with high academic credentials has taken up the mantle and is in his full thrust making the Institution known internationally. Dr. L. Mahadevan has traveled widely abroad and has given lectures and conducted workshops in Ayurveda in western countries including U.S.A. He has a flair for teaching and many students from all parts of the country come to study under him.

Dr. L. Mahadevan like his grand father is dispensed with the qualities of sympathy, compassion and philanthropy and so felt the need in forming this trust, Sri Sarada Mahadeva Iyer Ayurvedic educational and charitable Trust with noble intensions to promote and develop the system as well as helping the needy people whether in education or other social aspects.

At present the Trust is in the teething stage and is already helping the poor for their medical and other needs. The intension is to extend this to the people in their higher level of demands of health etc, for which funds are required. Also Dr. L. Mahadevan's intends to indulge in research to study the potential of individual drugs in treating different kinds of diseases and for which it is necessary to have infrastructure and the services of qualified people and to provide them with all facilities so that the involvement in this work will be in full.

Graduates from throughout the country come for clinical training as continuing medical education and they are provided all amenities to make their stay comfortable.

If the facilities can be improved more people can benefit by joining the CME programme. Funds are required for this.

It is the prayer of the founder of this trust to the philanthropic service minded Individuals and institutions to give their munificent donations and help this Institution to grow and extend its services to those who are in need.
